HEALTH OCCUPATIONS

  • 11th & 12th Grades

    3 credits (2 semesters)/.5 Credit Technical English (2 Semesters)/.5 Credit Technical Math (2 Semesters)

    Certifications: Certified Nurses Aide (CNA), American Heart Association (CPR)/OSHA 10 CareerSafe Certification

    *Prerequisite: COVID Vaccine Required for CNA

    *Fees: required for SkillsUSA membership, t-shirt, background check, drug test, TB screening, two sets of scrubs, gait belt, and CNA certificate, ID, & PIN.

    *This course has been approved for articulation agreements at Crowder College and Ozark Technical College.  MSSU offers Dual Credit Anatomy and Physiology for Lamar students in the Health Occupations program.  Additional fees may apply.

    Course Description:

    First-year students will be enrolled in the Certified Nurse Assistant course. This will enable the student to take the curriculum the nurse assistant must take to become certified. The students will spend part of their time in the classroom learning the skills necessary to care for the residents who cannot care for themselves. The students will then go to the nursing home to complete their clinical experience by providing care for the residents. After completing the clinical hours, the student can test for CNA. The CNA will allow the student to work in a nursing home, hospital, doctor’s office, or Home Health. The student will use these skills wherever they go, and with any career, they decide to pursue. As you

    continue to supplement your education and skills; your imagination is the only limit to employment opportunities. In this class, students also join SkillsUSA. SkillsUSA helps build leadership skills and allows you to compete in specific district and state competitions.

    Course Description:

    Do you want a satisfying career in health care? Health occupations can get you started down the path to a rewarding and fulfilling career in health care. The information you acquire will prepare you to continue your education in advanced healthcare fields such as nursing, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, dental assisting, medical records, or pre-med. You will be able to become a certified patient care technician while job shadowing health care professionals. In this class, students also join SkillsUSA. SkillsUSA helps build leadership skills and allows you to compete in specific district and state competitions.
