Course Description:
Students are taught the four basic welding processes in this course. These processes include Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), also known as Stick welding; Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), also known as MIG welding; Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), also known as TIG welding; and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW). Along with the four major processes listed above, students will also learn how to use the Oxygen-Acetylene Torch to weld, cut, and braze and use the Plasma Arc Cutting Equipment. In addition, students will gain knowledge of safety, setup techniques, metallurgy, and blueprint reading. At the end of the year, students are allowed to build small projects (time permitting) in which they can use the skills they have learned over the time they were in class using the welding processes and cutting techniques. Second-year students will also learn some basic Pipe Fitting and Welding Skills. Upon completion of this class, students will be able to obtain a job as an entry-level welder. In this class, students are required to become a member of the SkillsUSA organization, which allows them to compete in District, State, and National Contests if qualified.
